Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of embattled U.S. Senator John Edwards has died.

According to reports, the 61-year-old lost her battle with breast cancer today after doctors determined that her cancer had spread and recommended that she cease treatment and spend the rest of her time with family and close friends.
Edwards died at her Chapel Hill home and was first diagnosed in 2004.
Edwards made headlines after her husband John became embroiled in an infidelity scandal, during his campaign for presidency.
A spokesperson confirmed that she passed at 10:15 this morning.
